The top 5 Facebook chat emoticons

Facebook chat is currently one of the most, if not the most, popular ways of communication with your friends and family ‘live’ that there is. Often your words can tell them how you feel about them – your thoughts and wishes, but sometimes only a Facebook chat emoticon will do to let them know you are happy, sad, having crazy fun or completely bored.

We have seen that Facebook chat offers us many different options with regard which smileys and emotes we can use in our chats, but have you ever thought about which emotion or smilie is the best one? Right now we’re going to run through the list of the five most popular icons for Facebook, and then you can weigh-in on the debate as to whether you agree or disagree with them!

The top 5 Facebook chat emoticons

Facebook smiley number 5 – Angel emote

A famous singer once said that women were like angels, and he was right. The angel emoticon is easily one of the top five, just because of the huge number of different messages that the beautifu llittle white princess can send. Boyfriends send it to their lovers to tell them that they still think they are pure, girlfriends send them to their lovers to try to assure them that they’re not lying (even when they probably are) – people even send them to their family members. It’s purity, innocence and chastity – the perfect smiley!

Facebook emotion number 4 – The devil symbol

Every coin, of course, has two sides, and the angel’s other side is the devil chat emoticon. The devil looks much cooler than his ‘holier than thou’ counterpart, and he is not afraid to show the user’s true emotions in Facebook chat. Done a bad thing? Let people know about it. Want to tell someone that you really think they’re a naughty person? Send this smiley and they’ll realise that you’re onto them!

Facebook chat emoticon number 3 – Pacman

Back in the 1980’s, the biggest video game star was not Ryu, Ken or even Super Mario – it was a little yellow faced man who ran around eating ghosts and trying to save his girlfriend from the evil clutches of various empires – he was Pacman! This game, which began in the arcardes, became a worldwide hit thanks to its addictive nature and fun gameplay – and now you can use a pacman emoticon in Facebook chat! Cool!

Facebook smilie number 2 – The big smile

Nothing says you’re happy like the big smile emoticon for Facebook. It’s a timeless classic, which lets the user know that inside you are so happy and enjoying life. This is the most important feeling you can have!

FB icon number 1 – The robot

Nobody can compete with the robot emoticon on Facebook for the title of ‘coolest ever’. His skin is grey, and it seems that he doesn’t show much emotion himself, but nothing encapsulates the art of being on the internet than this guy. He also can be used as an alternative to the standard ‘huh’ emoticon which people often use to try to figure out what the hell someone just said. Use this one in your chats today and see how people react!

What are Facebook chat emoticons?

If you haven’t heard of Facebook, then you probably shouldn’t be reading this article because there is a high chance that you can not use a computer without your mother or father helping you to the bathroom every five minutes. The world’s biggest social network has permeated every single facet of our lives, from the workplace to school and among family members, friends, colleagues and even acquaintances who you may only ever meet one time. They’re all on your friends list.

Many people have a problem with the fact that Facebook is so completely ingrained into our collective conscience. What was once a cool place to share photos with friends and family at University has now become a place for families to unite and for parents to keep an eye on their college-loving offspring. It has come a long way from the campus-based information and communication site that was its founder’s initial plan.

Over the last five years, it has not just been Facebook’s rise which has been so famous, but the fall of other social networks which once competed with the big blue and white monster. Myspace, once the crowned king of the internet (with the most popular website of them all, and traffic and advertising figures to match) has now become an afterthought, a joke made by ‘cool people’ who talk about what is now completely ‘out’. Their fall was due to a mixture of factors, one of which was the Facebook took the social network experience and made it ‘clean’ and thoughtful.

How did it do this? It removed the trash graphics, the email forwards, the glitzy text and served the public what they really wanted – information and communication. This first came in the form of ’status updates’ and wall posting. What is a status update? It’s something which Facebook users use to give information about what they are doing at any specific moment. Some also use them to share web addresses or funny websites which they think their friends might be interested in. This function on Facebook was completely new – it changed the face of messaging from ‘push’ (like email) to ‘mini blog’ (like now, Twitter).

Wall posting was similar – it was like walking over to someone’s own bulletin board and leaving a note for them. People would read other messages on their friends boards (also known as Facebook stalking) and then connect with new people. It was a cyber revolution. There was, however, always something missing – the live chat feature which some people thought would never be able to be integrated into a social network.

Facebook chat emoticons

That’s when Facebook chat was introduced. It had always been the intention of the biggest social network in the world to constantly keep innovating and evolving, to stay ahead of the curve. When they introduced their chat function many people thought that they had made a mistake – the beta process was a little slow and had errors – the javascript sometimes made the pages disappear or act strangely, but after ironing out all of these issues, it turned out that they had struck gold. Facebook chat was one of the most popular clients on the internet, and its fans were wild for its clean cut style and cool colours.

One thing seemed to be missing however – Facebook chat emoticons! Where were the colouful smileys and symbols that were in nearly every other chat client available on the web? Text emotions were ok to use for some people, but generally speaking it was unheard of for an organization to create software like Facebook chat and not include Facebook chat emoticons listed for people to find. So where were they? The answer was that they were hidden in the software itself! After hours of testing, users managed to find a full list of the icons available for use in the chat program, and many were surprised by the different types and styles.

We will provide more exact information about which emoticons for Facebook chat are available in a later post, but for now just know this – they are some of the coolest and most fun symbols around! You can find some standard ones such as a love heart, smiley face, angel and devil – but also some strange emoticons or rare ones like a robot emoticon or a shark smiley! There is even a penguin! Keep reading for much more information about Facebook chat emoticons and how to use them!
